How does Brazilian modernism break with the aesthetic and ideological heritage of the XIX century, especially when it analyzes the representation of the national identity and the social otherness? How does the vanguard of the 2O's redefine certain persistent images in the tradition of national thought -as the supposed sexual exuberance of the tropics? I have studied these questions analyzing some paradigmatic texts of Oswald de Andrade -particularly the manifestoes 'da poesia Pau-Brasil' and 'Antropofago', and the novel Serafim Ponte Grande. I have found out that these texts parody the tradition of previous thought but they also hold it because they do not discuss the old association between the 'Other' and materiality, corporaiity, the unconsciousness, the predominance of sexuality, the grotesque, and/or their carnivalization. In some way, the inherited characteristics of laziness, sensuality, melancholy, and irrationality reappear in these texts. Notwithstanding the connotations are inverted, Brazil is still defined as 'the Other' in relation to the 'western civilization.'
