Since Homer (Iliad 1.262ff.; Odyssey 21.295ff.), Ixion's sons have motivated everlasting creations. The scenes sculptured in the Parthenon and in Zeus' temple at Olympia and Pindar's poems {Pythian Ode 2.39ff.) are actual testimonies in the Greek world. Significantly, the centaurs are the monsters that mostly share the life of the ancients. It's not surprising, therefore, that Leopoldo Marechal, well-known because of his wide and acknowledged classical background, was inspired by them in El Contauro (1940), 'Nacimiento de la Elegia' (1945) and Heptameron (1966). He treats these mythological monsters with renewed enthusiasm and from such a personal point of view that he gives them a definite Argentine idiosyncrasy. The purpose of this paper is to explore the recreation of the mythic Greek figure in El Centauro by Marechal. Another great Argentinean writer. Roberto Arlt, in a letter to the author, compared this poem to the architectural design of a cathedral.
