'En el rayón lleno de espejos' : Enrique Gómez Carrilo en la tienda por departamentos de la escritura modernista

Abstract

La crítica ha enfatizado excesivamente el carácter ornamental de la escritura modernista. Pero el modernismo usó las imposturas del estilo para desmantelar las oposiciones culturales alentadas por el positivismo. Así, los objetos importados de la tienda apenas resultan distinguibles de aquéllos que presumen de una procedencia más 'elevada', como el museo y las galerías de arte. El estilo va de compras, se extasía frente al probador de la escritura, de manera no muy diferente a como lo hace la mujer. La escritura se transforma entonces en guardarropía, en bal masqué. Los viajes a la tienda de Enrique Gómez Carrillo evidencian la imposibilidad de liberar el deseo y distribuirlo al mismo tiempo por canales seguros. Nada garantizaba que, al traspasar el umbral de la tienda, el sujeto masculino no fuera interpelado también por el mismo deseo que la mujer. Si en principio se pensaba, se creía, que la tienda era el emporio y la apoteosis de lo femenino, al entrar a ella Gómez Carrillo se inicia, despierta frente a un perturbador espejo que lo enreda al deseo de la compradora. La vitrina de la tienda y el 'reino interior' intercambian miradas de complicidad, permutan sus identidades.

Literary critics have overemphasized modernist writing's ornamental features. However, it was through the imposture of style that Spanish American modernists dismantled those cultural oppositions put forward by positivism. Commodities imported from the department store were hardly different from those boasting of a 'higher' origin, or status, like the works of art in the museums. The style goes shopping, and is captivated by its own image in the fitting room of writing, not in a manner very different from that of a woman. Writing becomes a wardrobe, a bal masqué. Enrique Gómez Carrillo's walks to the department store bear witness to the imposibility of releasing desire and, at the same time, of bridling it. There was no guarantee that, once the male subject went beyond the store's threshold, he would not resist the call of the same desire that preys on women. If it was first thought, or believed, that the department store was but the emporium and the apotheosis of the feminine, Gómez Carrillo just by stepping in finds himself trapped by the fitting room's disturbing mirror 'entangled in a feminine shopper's desires'. The department store's showcases and the 'reino interior' of modernistas trade conspiratorial gazes, exchange their identities.
