There are several ways of constructing and laying the foundation of a people's identity. One of these mechanisms, which has always been present throughout the history of civilizations, is the opposition to an 'other'. In this sense, we are interested in remarking, within the remaining fragments of Annales, those passages where the creation of the enemy's image is included. This presence stands for a counter-type working as a reflection facing the Roman self. By means of a lexical and philological study, we will deal in particular with those fragments containing references to Carthaginians, characterized by their crudelitas and superbli. This vision, that represents the opposite values to the imaginary of the urbs, becomes in its antithesis a cohesive element which strengthens the identity of the Roman people. In a back-and-forward movement, Ennius builds his look upon the others and at the same time is built himself through that same perspective.
