Priapi genio pervigilium deberi : parodic relations in the episode of Quartila, Satyricon, 16.1-26.6
For many reasons, exceptional, and prodigal in parodic resources, this episode, a supposed displacement of the fragmented book 14, seems to function without great argumentative links in the context of the first part of what remains of the opus. However, close scrutiny reveals clear correspondences with the general theme of the first part of the text; that is, the criticism on rhetoric and, on the other hand, a thematic-stylistic construction knitted on the level of symmetries, parallelisms, a play of oppositions and correlations which signal a double relationship with the longest chapters In the text: the Trimalchionis dinner -a hilarious and grotesque representation, equally prodigal in excesses and rough vicissitudes and the parodic inclusion of rituals- and the 'Crotona farce', which also offers -though less openly- links of inversion and humiliation among the actors and similar variations in the stereotype of feminine characters. Such similitudes could be real prefigurations due to the rhetorical resource of presenting episodes in a lower key and to the deliberate mixture of registers that sustain the mechanism of burlesque imitation. From this point of view, the chapters corresponding to Quartila's fiction, become interesting as an example of what we could call 'the parody of parody', both in the sense that the episode refers to others in the same text as in the relation established with the central theme of the Priapea reiigion. festively erotic in character, and its epigrammatic expression.
