La terminología de parentesco entre los tehuelches o aonek'enk de la Patagonia argentina

Abstract

A partir del inventario de términos de parentesco recogidos durante los trabajos de campo realizados entre 1983 y 1998, y que forma parte del Diccionario Tehuelche-Español/ Indice Español-Tehuelche (Fernandez Garay, en prensa) se analiza el sistema de parentesco de los tehuelches meridionales australes o aonek'enk, grupo indígena patagónico que habitó ia zona comprendida entre el río Santa Cruz y el Estrecho de Magallanes en épocas históricas. Se compara, cuando es necesario, con el sistema de los mapuches y de los selk'nam u onas. El parentesco es un aspecto muy importante en la organización social de un pueblo, y esta organización es, a su vez, un aspecto fundamental de la cultura que señala la forma de reiacionarse con los vecinos, de estructurar las relaciones de poder y las pautas de subsistencia. Cada culfura cuenta con un determinado conjunto de términos para denominar ios distintos grados de parentesco. Los diferentes términos de parentesco no son solo diferencias verbales, sino que se correlacionan con comportamientos sociales apropiados, a partir de la organización social que el sistema de parentesco establece para dicho grupo étnico. La terminología registrada entre los tehuelches se analiza según ocho principios básicos identificados por Kroeber. Ei análisis manifiesta la importancia que adquiere en este sistema la diferencia en los niveles de edad dentro de una misma generación, conclusión corroborada a partir de aigunos trabajos etnográficos realizados en el Area tehuelche.

After having obtained a glossary of kinship terms during the fieldwork that they did between 1983 and 1998, the authors propose to analize the kinship system of the Southern Meridional Tehuelches or Aonek'enk, an Indian group of the Patagonia, who inhabited the area comprised between the Santa Cruz river and the Strait of Magellan in historical times. Such a glossary forms part of the Diccionario Tehuelche-Español/ Indice Español- Tehuelche -Fernandez Garay, in press. When it is necessary, the Tehuelche system is compared with the Mapuche and the Seiknam systems. Kinship is a very important aspect in the social organization of people, and this organization is a fundamental aspect of culture, which indicates the relationship that exists among the members of the community, the structures of power and the patterns of subsistence. Each culture counts with a certain amount of terms to denominate the different degrees of kinship. The terms of kinship are not just verbal differences, but they correlate with appropriate social behaviors that the kinship system establishes for each ethnic group. The terminology registered among the Tehuelches is analyzed according to eight principies, identified by Kroeber. The study manifests the importance the difference of age in the same generation acquires in this system. Such a conclusion has been supported by the ethnographic work done in the Tehuelche area.
