El nacionalismo en geografía : reflexiones sobre la enseñanza en las ciencias sociales

Abstract

En el presente trabajo se realiza una aproximación histórica al estudio de los conceptos nación y nacionalismo desde la geografía política. Además se analizan diferentes enfoques y se citan diversos autores cuyas posturas más renovadas enriquecen la visión del Estado - Nación moderno. La Nación aparece como algo dado preexistente pero en realidad es una construcción social que no está antes que la historia sino que es un continuo proceso que permite a los hombres imaginar otras formas de convivencia. La identidad se reconstruye permanentemente conservando y cambiando y se advierte que los símbolos tradicionales pueden llegar a identificarlos menos que ciertas situaciones o manifestaciones de la vida cotidiana que despiertan mayores sentimientos. Hoy los geógrafos examinan el proceso de su constitución, señalando que éste es el producto de la acción de sociedades humanas que, en un momento de su evolución relativamente reciente, visto en conjunto- decidieron asumir esa identidad nacional, y asociarla con el Estado. Sería de extrema utilidad que en los diseños curriculares y los textos se enfatizaran los temas compartidos por las naciones latinoamericanas "con el objetivo de descentrar la mirada admitiendo el otro". The present work attempts a historical approach to the study of the concepts of nation and nationalism from the standpoint of political geography. Also different views are analysed and diverse authors cited whose renewed stances enrich the vision of the modern State-Nation. Nation appears as given and pre-existent, though in fact it is a social construction that does not come before history but is rather a continuous process that allows men to imagine other forms of coexistence. Identity is reconstructed permanently, through preservation and change, and it may be noticed that traditional symbols can end up being less identifying than certain daily-life situations or manifestations that arouse greater feelings. Today geographers examine the process of its constitution, pointing out that it is the product of the action of human societies that, at some point in their - relatively recent, on the whole - evolution, decided to adopt that national identity and associate it with the State. It would be extremely helpful that the topics shared by the Latin American nations were emphasized in the curricular designs and texts "with the objective of decentering the sight and admitting the other".
