Arsenic is a widely spread element in the environment. The continuous exposure to inorganic arsenic causes chronic poisoning. In the province of La Pampa there are wide zones where the underground water contains a high rate of arsenic. In human beings inorganic arsenic suffers methylation in the liver, what is considered as a detoxifying mechanism. The efficiency of the methylation depends on the oxidation state and dose, hence, when saturation is produced, it begins to accumulate in the hair. There have been discussions and uncertainties as regards arsenic related to cancer-risk evaluations. The question more frequently raised each time is whether it is correct or not, to adopt international standards, without previous physiologic and ecotoxic studies in the specific population where it is studied. In the present work we exhibit the results of the measurements of arsenic in hair of the inhabitants of General Pico, La Pampa, population that is considered under risk because of their consumption of drinking water with arsenic levels of 0,110 mgL-1, higher than 0, 010 mgL-1, maximum level accepted by the CódigoAlimentarioArgentino. The average value of arsenic in hair found was of 0,183 mg kg-1, lower to 0,200 mg kg-1 considered the upper threshold in unexposed populations.
