La Pampa province has agroecological conditions suitable for livestock, being one of the main economic activities. The western and central regions represent more than 80% of the province, is covered by natural pastures and cow-calf operations are the most common cattle production system. In contrast, growing and finishing of cattle either in pasture system or feed-lots are more commonly located in the east part of the province. In this context, gastrointestinal nematode infections are one of the most important health problems and causes the greatest economic losses, mainly in young animals, from weaning to 24 months of age. Therefore, the general objective of this thesis was to evaluate the effect of gastrointestinal parasites in calves that were born in natural pasture, reared, and bred at 24 months of age on implanted pasture and finally returned to natural pasture for gestation period and parturition. In addition, specific objectives were 1) to evaluate how the parasitic load of calves born in natural pastures in semi-arid zones is modified when they are transferred to implanted pastures; and 2) to evaluate and compare, in parasitized and non-parasitized animals, how gastrointestinal parasitosis influences body and reproductive development, fertility, and calf weight at birth. For this, sixty female calves were randomly allocated into two groups: Non-Parasited Group (NP), which received monthly anthelmintic treatments; and Parasited Group (P), which did not receive any treatment. Both groups were evaluated from weaning to calving. Fecal egg count (FEG), body weight, daily live weight gain, body condition, reproductive tract score, pelvic area, pregnancy and calving percentage were recorded. In addition, weight of calves at birth and the percentage of dystocia, were determined. In addition, the parasite load to which the animals were exposed was evaluated in natural and implanted pasture. The calves left the natural grassland with a low FEG, which increased significantly during rearing in the Parasitized Group, while in the Non-Parasitized group it remained low. Body weight, daily weight gain, body condition, pelvic area, as well as reproductive tract score , showed significant differences between the groups, always in favor of the non-Parasited group. On the contrary, the percentage of pregnancy, calving and dystocia, as well as the weight of the calves at birth, did not detect significant differences between the groups. On the other hand, the parasite loads recorded in natural and implanted pasture showed the expected dynamic, with higher levels of contamination in autumn-winter. Under the conditions of this study, it is possible to conclude that gastrointestinal parasites affected the growth of replacement females. However, in a traditional service of 24 or 27 months, this does not translate into decreased fertility or reproductive performance.
