The systemic functional approach (SFA) considers language as 'meaning potential' (Halliday, 1978, p. 27), and focuses on how speakers/writers construct meanings in a particular social context, and relates their intentions to concrete forms of linguistic resources. As teachers of English Grammar I and of English Language I, subjects which are taught in parallel in the first year of the Teacher Training Course at the University of La Pampa, and which support each other, we teach the English language considering the students' need to understand the connections between linguistic and extra linguistic factors. We concentrate on cohesion as a resource used to create links within a sentence, different sentences and paragraphs (Halliday and Hasan, 1976). The basic purpose of this work is to show that the study of cohesive devices following the framework of systemic functional linguistics in English Grammar I helps students to increase their level of literacy in their production of narrative texts in English Language I. The cohesive devices taken into consideration are referencing, conjunction and lexical cohesion. In this case study we use narrative excerpts from short stories included in the English Language I syllabus, in which we analyse cohesive devices and how they contribute to the overall organization of a text. We conclude that student’s writing is notably improved if they are aware of the cohesive devices that they can employ in the course of their writing practice.
