The present study analyses different historiographical views about the process that formed the state monopoly of violence in Western Europe. The topic gains importance since medieval times when the pyramidal and fragmentary structure of the feudal political power is identified and analysed. In view of that, a critical study of some of the interpretative paradigms is carried out, in an attempt to understand the theoretical basis that structures those views.
