Grandes sistemas técnicos y espacio geográfico : revisión de posturas y articulaciones conceptuales

Abstract

El estudio de las modernas redes de infraestructura en términos de 'grandes sistemas técnicos' fue inaugurado por Hughes y desarrollado por analistas sociales de la técnica como Joerges, Mayntz y Gras. Milton Santos incorporó nociones procedentes de dicha área del saber en su caracterización del sistema técnico actual y del espacio geográfico. El artículo revisa el concepto de gran sistema técnico, haciendo hincapié en una selección de contribuciones que poseen pertinencia para su adopción en la Geografía, es decir, miradas susceptibles de ser integradas a través del momento espacial de la teorización. La base para ordenar la articulación conceptual se encuentra en la teoría del espacio de Milton Santos. Las ideas que se discuten son reinterpretadas, así, a la luz de un marco teórico que prefigura una comprensión particular de la naturaleza de lo geográfico. La reunión de aportes, por lo tanto, pretenden ofrecer un bagaje conceptual para el abordaje de la estructuración, el funcionamiento y el desarrollo de los grandes sistemas técnicos: creaciones heterogéneas, complejas, diversificadas y eminentemente políticas que desempeñan papeles estratégicos en la modernización de la sociedad, implicados en prácticamente todas las prácticas humanas, y que definen un espacio propio.

The study of modern infrastructure networks in terms of 'large technical systems' was firstly established by Hughes and later developed by social analysts of technology such as Joerges, Mayntz and Gras. Milton Santos incorporated notions from this area of knowledge when he characterized the current technical system and the geographical space. The article reviews the concept of large technical system, emphasizing a set of contributions that are highly useful in the field of geography, i.e. insights likely to be integrated at the moment of space theorizing. The basis for organizing conceptual articulations is present in Milton Santos’ theory of space. So, the ideas discussed are reinterpreted applying a theoretical framework that foresees a particular understanding of the nature of the geographical element. The contributions, therefore, aimed at providing a conceptual background to approach the structure, operation and development of large technical systems: heterogeneous, complex, diversified and highly political creations that play strategic roles in the modernization of society, involved in virtually all human practices and which define their own space
