Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a perennial herbaceous plant, belonging to the legume family, one of the world's most important forage species. The objective of the work was to evaluate the production of seeds and other related characters in alfalfa populations of varieties with different winter rest and the underlying genetic mechanisms, under culture in cages in the Semi-arid Pampean Region. In September 2015, plants from Alfalfa populations (from 2013) were collected from four provinces and 6 isolated cages were set up according to the winter rest group: 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. The test was carried out at the EEA Anguil, ten plants were selected at random from each cage, identifying the tallest stems and to which the following variables were measured per individual plant: 1) dry matter per plant 2) number of pods 3) number of seeds per pods 4) weight of pods and 5) total seed weight per plant. Descriptive statistics were calculated to characterize the populations and phenotypic correlations and path coefficient were analyzed. In summary variable 3) was the one that had the greatest direct effect. And it is stated that the mechanisms of seed production in alfalfa are similar in the different populations.
