Wind erosion is an important soil degradation process in arid and semiarid regions of the world. For this reason a field study was c~rried out in the semiarid pampean region of Argentina (RSPC) with the purpose of evaluating the qualitative and quantitative soil losses produced by this process. Wind erosion measurements were carried out in two sites with soils classified as an Entic Haplustoll and a Typic Ustipsarnment, respectively, on 9880 m2 sized plots. Both soils had the same management history: a perennial Eragrostis curvula pasture since more than 3O years, and were maintained bare and with the lowest surface roughness along this study. Measurements were made with BSNE samplers above 13.5 cm height, with modified BSNE samplers aboye 7 cm height, and with surface samplers from soil surface. Results showed that the amount of dust collected with BSNE samplers represented a 14.9 % ofthe material collected from the soil surface with the hole set of samplers. Because of that BSNE measurements were multiplied by the coefficient 6.72, deduced from the correlation ofBSNE measurements with those obtained from the soil surface by means of simple regression analysis. Absolute total soil losses correlated positively with the storm length, being losses of the Typic Ustipsamment (270 tnlha.yr.) higher than of the Typic Haplustoll (40 tn/ha.yr.). Such losses were equivalent to a decrease of2.13 and 0.31 cm ofthe Ahorizon, respectively. Predictions made with the Wind Erosion Equation (WEQ) subestimated the amounts of erosion measured in the field at same rates in both soils (between 94 and 96 %). This subestimation was attributed to the feeding of the WEQ with climatological data based on annual averages, which does not allow to evaluate individual storms of high erosivity. The limited data used in this study did not allow to predict properly the wind erosion amounts with the Revised Wind Erosion Equation (RWEQ). The amounts of eroded material from the Ustipsarnment in spring and surnmer months doubled the amounts eroded material of autumn and winter months. In the Haplustoll the amount of eroded material was similar in both sampling periods. These results were attributed to the lower susceptibility of the Haplustoll to be eroded, as a consequence of its higher aggregate stability, which allowed to resist the erosion, even during the more erodable conditions of the spring and the surnmer. The silt contents increased while the sand contents decreased with height. These tendencies were attributed to the higher weight of the sand particles and to the lower of silt particles, which allowed to the sands to be transported only at few centimenters above surface level. Clay contents did not show defmite tendencies, probably because of the formation of different sized clay aggregates in different textured soils. Silt was the more enriched fraction in the eroded material, mainly in the Ustipsamment. Enrichment rates of this fraction (relationship between the silt concentration in the eroded material and within the fírst 2 soil cm) was 20 for the Haplustoll and 34 for the Ustipsamment. Concentrations of organic matter (MO), Cu, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, and P in the eroded material increased with height in accordance with the finer textures. Concentrations of MO and Zn contents of the eroded material were higher in the Haplustoll, while the rest of the elements were accumulated at similar rates in both soils. Absolute losses of OM and all studied elements were in the Haplustoll 22% of those measured in the Ustipsamment. The concentrations of MO, Cu, Mg, Fe y Mn correlated positively with mean wind speeds, probably due to the transportation of coarse aggregates containing lower concentrations of all elements, by high speeded winds. P and Ca correlated positively and negatively, respectively, with storm length, due to the accumulation of P in finer aggregates « 2um) and ofCa in coarsest aggregates (2 -104 um). The concentration of heavy minerals (hyperstene and augite) in the 75 -100 um size fraction of the eroded material of the Haplustoll doubled the concentration of the Ustipsamment. The volcanic glasses were the light minerals that accumulated to a larger extent in the 75 -100 um size fraction, increasing their contents with height. The calcic plagioclases tended to decrease their contents with height. Sorne methodological considerations can be deduced from present results, which must be taken into account in future studies: 1) the necessity of measuring wind erosion in short lasting storms, with the purpose of avoiding large variations of the wind direction, which can affect the normal distribution of dust along the distance, and therefore the calculations of the mass flux, 2) the correction of the amounts of eroded material measured with BSNE samplers with those obtained from the soil surface for different conditions of soil roughness y and surface cover, and 3) the identification of the parameters to be adjusted to reach a reliable use of the RWEQ in the RSPC.en
