¿Puede la literatura promover el pensamiento crítico en el profesorado en inglés?

Abstract

Ambos docentes, los protagonistas de los cuentos cortos Mr. Raynor the schoolteacher (Sillitoe, 1959) y Dying to see the sea (Pandit, 2003/2006) difieren claramente en sus divergentes concepciones ideológicas de la sociedad, y las estudiantes de Literatura de Habla Inglesa II del Profesorado en Inglés de la Universidad Nacional de La Pampa, Argentina, son invitadas a leer críticamente dichas representaciones en contrapunto. En este artículo, se describen las actividades diseñadas para una clase de literatura destinada a promover la exploración de representaciones de docentes comprometidos con la reproducción o el cambio social, respectivamente, y se analiza su puesta en práctica con base en datos etnográficos recabados en 2016. Se aspira a demostrar que es posible leer el mundo críticamente a partir de la literatura y que ésta puede constituir una fuente poderosa de reflexión acerca del conflicto social en la formación docente en inglés.

Both teachers, the main characters in Sillitoe’s (1959) Mr. Raynor the schoolteacher and Pandit’s (2003/2006) Dying to see the sea display clearly divergent representations of society. These literary texts are offered to the students for their reading in counterpoint in English Literature II at the English Language Teacher Education (ELTEd) program at Universidad Nacional de La Pampa, Argentina. A series of activities designed to elicit commitment with either social reproduction or social change in line with the perspectives displayed by the protagonists of each story are described in this article, and, based on the results of a pilot ethnographic study, the way in which they were implemented in 2016 is analyzed. It is hoped that the results will demonstrate that literature can still be a powerful source to reflect upon social conflict, that students in teacher education are aware of the social commitment implicit in their future profession, and that it is plausible to grow critical through literature in ELTEd.
