Tales of the Pampas : ¿tradición selectiva y/o traducción cultural?

Abstract

William Bulfin publicó sus 'Tales of the Pampas' en el periódico The Southern Cross (1892-1900) hasta que en 1997 fueron traducidos al español por Alejandro Patricio Clancy. En sus cuentos, Bulfin recuperó el discurso de la 'nostalgia comunitaria' que fomentó en los irlandeses la necesidad de crear una comunidad fuerte y cerrada que los resguardara de los peligros externos y mantuviera vigentes los lazos con su tierra de origen. Con el propósito de preservar la identidad irlandesa, y con la firme convicción de que la lengua madre refuerza los lazos identitarios, el autor hizo uso de un inglés simple, y así ejemplificó el idioma que usaron los inmigrantes irlandeses para vivir y desarrollarse en la Argentina. El propósito de este trabajo es analizar las estrategias utilizadas por Bulfin para 'traducir' la cultura irlandesa en una tradición selectiva poderosa a través de un discurso ideológicamente coherente.

William Bulfin published his 'Tales of the Pampas' in The Southern Cross until they were translated into Spanish by Alejandro Patrick Clancy in 1997. In his tales, Bulfin regained the 'communal nostalgia' speech, which encouraged in the Irish the need to create a strong and closed community that could protect them against external dangers and maintain the existing ties with their homeland. In order to preserve the Irish identity, and with the firm conviction that the mother tongue strengthens the identity ties, the author made use of plain English, and so he exemplified the language used by the Irish immigrants to live and grow in Argentina. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the strategies used by Bulfin to 'translate' the Irish culture into a powerful selective tradition through an ideologically coherent discourse.
