La supervivencia de la simbología pagana en Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

Abstract

Al analizar el poema Sir Gawain and the Green Knight del siglo XIV podemos comprobar que los mitos y símbolos que las sociedades europeas heredaron de sus ancestros prehistóricos seguían teniendo un importante significado en la mente de las poblaciones agrícolas medievales, que al igual que aquellos se hallaban a merced de la naturaleza para su propia subsistencia. La persistencia de los elementos míticos relacionados con el tiempo cíclico y la sucesión de las estaciones prueba que hubo una continuidad en las formas de pensamiento de ambas sociedades que llegó a su fin con el triunfo del cristianismo y la implantación de una concepción lineal del tiempo propia del paradigma judeo-cristiano.

By analyzing the English 14th century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, we can verify that the myths and symbols that were passed on to the European societies by their ancestors retained their value and significance for the agricultural populations of the Middle Ages, which were as dependent on nature for their survival as their forefathers. The endurance of the mythical elements related to the cyclical time and the succession of the seasons confirm the continuity of the thought patterns of these societies, which came to an end with the triumph of Christianity and the establishment of the lineal conception of time of the Judeo-Christian paradigm.
