The article deals with different cultural and political functions which the Greek language had in the course of its long history. The assumption of the Library of Alexandria was that the Greek language was able to contain the universal, in the sense that all human thought was translatable into Greek. Within this historical frame the version of the Bible or Septuagint represented for Alexandrian Jews the universal diffusion of a particular 'text': the Law of Moses. When the Greek Roman Empire wanted to spread this text as a part of its Christian faith, it found that most of the surrounding nations lacked written language. The Greek alphabet and morphology, then, acted as a basis on which to produce new writing methods and linguistic developments.
