Coiluthus of Lycopolis, epic poet who lived in the beginning of the sixth century, is the author of this epyllion of 392 verses. He was an urban male, belonged to a wealthy family and received a deeply literary and linguistic Hellenic education, certainly detached from liturgical or monastic circles. The Rape of Helen is a brief narrative poem in dactylic hexameter usually dealing with mythological and erotic themes. It is characterized by lively description, scholarly allusions, and an elevated tone similar to the elegy. The analysis shows that Greek literature is a self- conscious literature, Its basic components (rhetoric, thematic, semiotic) actualize the distinct essence of Hellenism without taking into consideration the socio-political frame in which is produced.
