The understanding of the interaction between surface water and groundwater in semiarid environments becomes particularly relevant primarily due to the scarcity and variability of water resources. Semiarid environments are characterized by limited availability of water resources in both quantity and quality, and by the spatial heterogeneity and temporal variations of theirs physical, chemical and biotic components. Interactions between surface water and groundwater are episodic in nature, highly variable and usually occur in defined areas, typically limited to mountainous areas, to foothills, to irrigation areas and alluvial valleys. As a result, river-aquifer interactions are complex both in space and time and given its significance and the difficulty in measuring the mass flows between the surface water and groundwater, different methods should be used to describe the processes involved The project focuses on one main goal that is the analysis of the interaction between surface and ground water and their relation to runoff in the lower basin of the Atuel river. In particular, this project has the following specific objectives: a) study of the dynamics of surface runoff and groundwater levels, b) hydrochemical characterization of surface water and groundwater, and c) a description of isotope ratios at the basin between the resource surface and underground water. This study will contribute to the understanding of the dynamics and areal extent of the interaction between surface water and groundwater, to the hydrochemical characterization of the runoff along the basin, and to the study of the effect of intermittent runoff on the river-aquifer interaction, as a result of the modification of the hydrological regime of the Atuel river.
