Inter-cultural translation : the incorporation of the noun into Ranquel
Intercultural translation implies not onIy translating a text from a source language into a target language but also translating the cultural aspects that are codified in the source language. Those cultural aspects are not only present in the ranquel lexical items but also in the syntactic structure ofthe language. For that reason, in this paper we are using the concept of ethno-syntax formulated by Wierzbicka (1988), who considers that syntactic constructions codify and embody specific significations of a language and ways of thinking, reason why the syntax can determine -up to a certain point- the cognitive profile of the language. The author says that, as the syntactic structures are more frequent than certain lexical items, more stable and more resistant to changes, and less dependent on extralinguistic factors, they become valuable sources to objectify the ways in which a particular linguistic cornmunity thinks and conceives the world. And she adds that the domain of ethno-syntax is that of syntax, only that it differs in the perspective from which the syntactic factors are placed, because what rnatters in this case is the ethno-philosophy that is embodied in and expressed through syntactic structures (1988: 169-170). Thus, we will analyze a particular syntactic construction: the nominal incorporation in ranquel, and the semantic and pragmatic aspects that it conveys, so as to consider, later on, the conflicts that its translation into Spanish creates.
