Hábitat y vida cotidiana
Environment and daily life : the case of 'barrio Río Atuel'
Resumen
The analysis carried out in this document deals with the relations established in everyday lije between the environment and the social groups that dwell in the Barrio Río Atuel of the city of Santa Rosa -La Pampa- Argentina. It is set within the theoretical framework of the so-called "personal geographies" that aim at studying space from the individuals themselves, from their own perception and relationship with the concrete territory. Barrio Río Atuel is one of the most densely populated planned housing developments in the city, with a peculiar morphology differentiated from the majority of sate-subsidised planned neighbourhoods. The architectural typology, consisting of multifamily homes (tower blocks), exerts a direct influence on social relations, privacy and independence, thus defining the quality of the environment and urging a re-adaptation of its dwellers' ways of conduct. The intensity of social relations shows traces of conflicting situations and of strong social pressure. The maintenance of communal spaces and the development of daily activities, above all those of children and adolescents, generate the greatest problems. However, the causes of these "social nuisances" do not lie on the individuals themselves, but on the direct relationship they have witlt the design of the buildings and the reduced space they occupy.
