The objective was to evaluate the morphogenetic and structural characteristics of Panicum coloratum L. tillers of different cutting height (AC) and age. Fifteen tillers were transplanted by pot. These pots were fully randomized with 3 × 3 factorial design and were replicated five times under greenhouse conditions. After a period of 140 days, the live tillers were marked with the same coloured plastic-coated wire. Then, every time 506±16 degree days (GD) were accumulated, the plants were cut following the AC treatment (40, 80 and 120 mm). The new tillers were marked with a different coloured plastic-coated wire, in this way four growing periods (P1 to P4) and three tiller cohorts were performed: old (> 1500 GD), mature (500-1500 GD) and young (< 500 GD). Every seven days, from the beginning of P4 to 500 GD, the leaf blade length was measured and the number of expanded leaves was counted. This measurement allowed estimate the leaf appearance rate (TAH), leaf elongation rate (TEF), number of live leaves per tiller and leaf length (LL). Data were analyzed by ANOVA and means were compared using LSD test (α = 0.05). The young tillers showed greater TAH, TEF, leaf number and LL (p<0.05) at a 40 mm AC, whereas at 80 and 120 mm, the differences were only recorded between young and mature tillers (interaction AC × cohort; p<0.01). Severe defoliation would increase the growing of young tillers compared to mature and old ones.
